Tankless vs. Traditional Water Heaters: Which Is Right for You?

Plumbing Tips June 14, 2026  •  1 min read

When it’s time to replace your water heater, you’ll face a key decision: a traditional tank model or a modern tankless unit. Each has its strengths.

Traditional Tank Water Heaters

These store and heat 40–80 gallons of water. They have a lower upfront cost and are simple to install or replace. The trade-offs are higher standby energy use and a limited supply of hot water that can run out during heavy use.

Tankless (On-Demand) Water Heaters

Tankless units heat water only as you need it, delivering an endless supply and using less energy. A condensing tankless heater can be 95–98% efficient. They cost more upfront but often pay off through energy savings and a longer lifespan.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Choose a tank if you want a lower initial cost and a straightforward replacement.
  • Choose tankless if you want long-term efficiency, space savings, and unlimited hot water.
